The Stevens Competition 2009 brief was to design a ‘transition window’ for the London Headquarters of the Pontifical Mission Societies at 23 Eccleston Square, London SW1V 1NU.
The window is on the staircase which leads from the bustle of the street and office on the ground floor to the spaces set aside for worship, public reception and discussion on the floors above. The window is intended to describe and promote the work of the Pontifical Mission Societies.
The sample panel shows part of the upper section of the window design. The glass panels are formed from fused coloured glass frit and are held in a leaded framework. The sandblasted, kiln-formed cross glows when exposed to external lighting, whether daylight or moonlight. The lower section of the window would use antique glass and traditional stained glass techniques.
This design and sample panel was highly commended by the Worshipful Company of Glaziers and Painters of Glass.
